New players should begin with The Pillar of Autumn
Operation: Meteorite is a three-mission prequel made for Campaign Evolved, but chronological placement does not automatically make it the best introduction. A first-time Halo player should usually complete the ten rebuilt original missions from The Pillar of Autumn through The Maw, then play Boarding Action, The Most Dangerous Game, and Heavy Burden. That order preserves the original campaign’s gradual discovery of the ring, its threats, and Cortana’s changing understanding.
The new operation pairs Master Chief with Sergeant Johnson before the ring campaign and assumes the player is comfortable with the wider combat sandbox. Playing it afterward turns the prequel into additional context rather than an explanation delivered before the central mystery. Nothing in the base-game feature list makes the three missions a mandatory tutorial, and every mode, collectible type, and gameplay feature remains available without treating them as an opening chapter.
Returning Halo fans can choose chronological order
Players who already know Combat Evolved can reasonably start with Boarding Action. Chronological order places all three Operation: Meteorite missions before The Pillar of Autumn and makes their Johnson connection immediately visible. It also presents the newly created spaces, enemies, and combat situations before the familiar ten-mission arc, which can make the remake feel new from its opening hour.
The tradeoff is tonal rather than mechanical. Newer mission design and the expanded weapon sandbox may create a different first impression from the contained corridors of The Pillar of Autumn. If a returning group wants the strongest contrast between new and rebuilt material, play the ten classic chapters first. If the group wants timeline order and already knows the reveals, play Meteorite first without concern about progression loss.
Use menu order for collectibles and co-op cleanup
After finishing the story, switch from narrative preference to a simple database order. Clear missions one through thirteen, securing three Skulls and one Terminal in each. The three Operation: Meteorite chapters then sit at positions eleven through thirteen, making the fifty-two-item checklist easy to audit and keeping the Terminal sequence readable from Approach through Harmonious Clarity.
For a new co-op fireteam, test accounts, crossplay, shared progression, and difficulty in The Pillar of Autumn before committing to a longer chapter. Once the lobby is stable, either story order works. Use the same host, regroup at navigation markers, and confirm each four-item mission sweep before moving on. Narrative order is a preference; verified mission completion and collectible counters are the progression safeguards.
